Tie Dye Experiment
Objective: Use the Process of dying fabrics to illustrate chemical reactions, equilibrium, Chemical bonding and pH.
Pre-Lab questions: 1. Where did the art of dying fibers orginate? The art of dying clothing fibers probably originated in india or china No later then 2500 BC.
2. Originally what type of substances were used to Dye?
-Bugs
-Flowers
-Cabbage
-Berries
-bark
-Leaves and Roots.
3.What are the fibers of the shirt made of? the Fibers of the cotten based shirt was made out of Long strands of cellulose molecules.
4. What Chemical interaction is occuring when fibers are dyed?
-Chemistry of dyes
5. Explain how the ionic Bonding is used to dye the shirts In this lab.
-Dyes bond to molecules of the fabrics and can never be washed Out. ( Fiber Active Dyes)
Procedures: Steps to follow during this Experment.
Step 1:With a permanent marker, write you're name on the cloth that you will be tie dyeing.
Step 2: Soak you're cloth in hot water for about 5 minutes. be sure you put it in you're tub marked for you're period (when doing this in class that is.)
Step 3: Put on a pair of gloves, remove your cloth from the tub and wring it out.
Step 4: Dye Application. apply the dye using applicator bottles. be aware that mixing will occur when the other dyes come in contact with one another. Recomended to use Complementary colors such as, Purple and Yellow, Blue and Orange, or red and Green. Also the more dye you put on a given spot the less white their will be on the final product.
Step 5: Place your fabric in a grocery bag and write your name on it so your sure not to lose it.(tie the bag and keep it that way for 24 hours)
Step 6: After the cloth has been in the Bag for 24 Hours open the bag, take it out and wrise it several times with warm(not hot) water, befpre removeing strings or rubber bands. Rinse several times again until it is rinsing clean. at this point you can hang itout to dry or place it in another bag to take it home and wash.
Procedure for washing the shirt: The first time you wash it , place it alone in the washing machine with just a small squirt of dishwashing liquid like dawn or joy. Do not use laundry detergent.
Post lab questions: 1. If you dyed a rainbow spiral on a shirt and then soaked it in black dye bath, the result
Would be a black shirt with a rainbow spiral pattern. Why doesn't the entire shirt dye black?
-The dye fibers only connect with the Strands of cellulos molecules when they are ready to connect, This stops the rest of the shirt from being dyed
2. What is the purpose of soaking the shirts in hot water for 5 minutes?
- This is to get water molecules onto the cellulose strands so that the Dye fibers can stick to the cellulose molecules.
3. Why is 100% cotten the best type of cloth to use with fiber reactive dyes?
- 100% cotten is the best for fiber reactive dyes because the dye itself can't be washed out of the Cloth makin gn it permanent.
4. What are some advantages of fiber reactive dyes?
- Fiber reactive dyes are extremely difficult and nearly impossible to wash out of 100% cotten material.
5. Explain how ionic bonding is used to dye the shirts in this lab?First the cloths are sat in warm water on order to prepare the strands of cellulose . The water molecukes on the celkulose strands makes it possible for the Fiber reactive dye to form a ionic bond with the cloth.
